A little help from our friends

Let's start the story of this home right from the start shall we. When Jay & Gord decided to make the move from mainland Vancouver to island life in Victoria, they turned to their good friend and realtor extraurdinaire Christina Stack to help them find the perfect pad.  Top three must haves on the docket were open modern architecture, under 2,500 sqft and high end finishes. It only too 2 weeks for Christina to hand over the keys to the ideal house; a brand new home with modern lines and an open layout. The only (easily amendable) negative was the house was a little flavourless, devoid of personality and very beige town. So Christina, one of my closest buds, called me up to see if I could help Jay & Gord inject a little style into their space, and turn it from a generic builder home into something that was uniquely theirs. They needed all new furniture, and asked we source most of the peices from the store Christna co-owns with hubby Chris Rothery, Only Human. I love a good collaboration, so I was more than happy to dig in.

Now let's meet the clients. As co-owner of WildPlay Elements Park, Gord takes his pleasure very seriously. He's a savvy business man who also knows more than just a thing or two about astronomy, and is one of those all-round genuine nice guys. Jay is a hard working, mountain biking fire-cracker with a love of quirky art, good wine and a good laugh. These people were speaking my language when they told me they wanted their space to be vibrant and modern with a little quirk, truly a client-designer match made in heaven. And to complete the circle of perfect pairings, OnlyHuman was the ideal source to outfit the space, with great pieces from HAY, Gus Modern, Bocci & BluDot.  The collaboration resulted in a tailored interior that is casual, friendly & energetic; a mirror reflection of Jay & Gord's personalities and style.

Are those original Hans Wegner Teddy Bear chairs you might ask? Why yes they are. These treasures originally designed in 1951 were rescued from Gord's childhood family cabin, refinished and reupholstered for their new life. Nothing beats mixing in family heirlooms to personalize a modern space.

An open, clean modern layout with a wall of windows beautifully lighting the space was an ideal canvas to work from.  All it needed was a dose of pattern and colour to spice things up.

I'm a big believer that art should be much more than just space filler on an empty wall, it's an opportunity to create a personal expression or reflection of the owner. With a 25 foot high vaulted ceiling, we needed something that would not only fill the large volume of space but also connect the clients. And with Gords deep love for astronomy and Masters in Astrophysics, what better theme for a giant blue wall than 'space'? To bring this idea to life we closely collaborated with local Victoria artist Lauren Mycroft and came up with a colourful nebula concept that would add another dimension (sorry, can't help myself with the puns).  We incorporated holes within the arrangement to offset the existing windows and cover more height. Bocci 28 Series wall sconces add a nice hit of soft lighting. Huge thank you and shout out to Michael Warren of Madrona Gallery who braved the height for this install!

When not on the road Jay often works from home, so it was important to create a work space that was stimulating and comfortable. We put this together with a colourful combination of Only Human pieces: rocking chair & side table from Gus Modern, Thomas Paul pillow, HAY area rug, BluDot book shelf, and Canadian Lakes & Forests poster from Vancouver Island's own DNG Studio.

Venturing upstairs, Jay & Gord already had a bed & side tables to outfit their master bedroom, but they needed a few more pieces to complete their private retreat. To set the mood, we had this cloud wallpaper custom printed in Paris to tailor fit the 15 foot high feature wall, the gradient dot pattern travels up the wall creating a unique mural. BluDot bookcase & lamp, Gus Modern sofa care of (where else) Only Human.

Ask any woman; no bedroom is complete without a full length mirror. This piece from BluDot was a house warming gift from Christina, and a perfect addition to the room.
